How To Stop Dog Diarrhea In It’s Tracks!

March 31st, 2011

Did you know that one of the most common ailments your dog will face throughout his lifetime will probably be bouts of diarrhea?

Dogs will be dogs and many times they eat something out of curiosity when you are not looking.  The next thing you know you are cleaning up a big dog diarrhea mess.  I know – that is the last thing you want to do isn’t it.  But did you know that there is a way that you can prevent this very inconvenient occurrence?

Let’s talk about how to prevent the dog diarrhea event and what to do about it after the fact – without having to go to the vet.

1.  If you want to keep your dogs digestive tract healthy on a regular basis, you can simply give your dog some plain yogurt about once per week

2.  If your dog gets diarrhea, then you give him some yogurt twice a day for three to four days and that should clear it up without going to the vet.

IMPORTANT – IF YOU DO NOT SEE IMPROVEMENT WITHIN THAT TIME – TAKE YOUR DOG TO THE VET IMMEDIATELY.

OR IF YOU DOG HAS DIARRHEA AND VOMITING - TAKE YOUR DOG TO THE VET IMMEDIATELY, SKIP THE YOGURT AND DO NOT WAIT!!!   Your dog can get dehydrated very easily and this could cause serious problems.

The yogurt solution works great for an everyday bout of dog diarrhea.  However, you know your dog, if you even think for a minute that it could be something more than just dog diarrhea, please, please, please take your dog to the vet immediately.

The yogurt solution has saved me hundreds, if not thousands of dollars in vet bills over the years and I am ever so grateful to the person that told me about it; so now I want to pass it along to you.  But I cannot stress enough that this is just for an everyday case of dog diarrhea.  There are times when you MUST take your dog to the vet for treatment.

Here are the amounts of yogurt to give to your dog for everyday dog diarrhea:

Small Dogs – two teaspoons – twice a day – for three to four days if they already have diarrhea and once a week for prevention

Medium Dogs – three teaspoons – twice a day – for three to four days if they already have diarrhea and once a week for prevention

Large Dogs – three tablespoons – twice a day – for three to four days if they already have diarrhea and once a week for prevention

Thank you for reading my blog and I hope this helps you as much as it has helped me over the years!

Best Wishes!

HOW AND WHEN TO INDUCE VOMITING IF YOUR DOG GETS SICK

The following vomit guide is taken from Dogs: The Ultimate Care Guide, Good Health,Loving Care, Maximum Longevity, published by Rodale Press, Inc.

How and When to Induce Vomiting

One teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide for each ten pounds of body weight can quickly induce vomiting. If you’re fresh out of hydrogen peroxide, try a combination of one tablespoon of dry mustard and one cup of cold water. But  vomiting should never be induced when trying to purge caustic substances such as drain cleaner and petroleum-based products that can burn twice — once when they do go down and again if they are vomited.

Also, if your pooch is having trouble breathing, having seizures, has a slow heart rate, is unconscious, or has a bloated stomach, never induce vomiting.

Why Do Dogs Eat Grass?

March 30th, 2011

Why Do Dogs Eat Grass?

That is the question ~ it is not uncommon for dogs to eat grass. Studies show that dogs eat grass for many reasons but rest assured it will not harm your dog unless your grass has been recently treated with fertilizer, pesticide or other chemicals.

~ Here are just some of the reasons your dog eats grass ~

• Because it makes them sick – dogs eat grass to help them vomit due to the build up of bile in their stomach. A dogs gallbladder will produce bile which is secreted into their stomach to aide in the digestion of fats
• If grass if eaten on a daily basis may indicate a gastrointestinal problem and should be taken to a vet
• Some dogs eat grass because they enjoy it
• Dogs eat grass because it fills a dietary need
• A dietary imbalance such as lacking in certain vitamins and minerals will cause a dog to eat grass
• Go to the vet immediately if: you dog exhibits these signs – excessive vomiting not associated with eating grass, diarrhea, lack of energy, loss of appetite, weight loss
• Dogs eat grass as an instinctive need for more fiber in their diet
• In the wild a dogs eat grass to induce vomiting to get rid of a dangerous substance or dislodge a foreign material

Well there you have it ~ I guess we will never truly know why dogs eat grass but we do know that it is nothing to worry about.

Dangerous Dog Treats

March 30th, 2011

Dangerous Dog Treats

All dogs love treats but do you know which ones are truly safe and which ones could be fatal?

  • There have been recent reports that “Greenies” are dangerous and sometimes fatal.  A CNN investigation uncovered 40 cases since 2003 where a veterinarian had to extract a Greenie from a dog after the treat became stuck in the dogs esophagus or intestine and in 13 of those cases the dog died. If your dog eats a Greenie and displays the following symptoms: vomiting, bloody stool, difficult breathing; seek medical treatment immediately.    Buyer Beware
  • Rawhide Chews – Dogs Love Them  – but they are dangerous and should be avoided.  Many rawhides are brought in from outside of the United States and can actually be preserved with arsenic based chemicals and some that cause cancer .  In addition rawhides pose a potential choking danger because as your dog chews off pieces some of those pieces could become lodged in your dogs throat. Up to 40% of dogs are allergic to rawhide chews
  • Animal Bones – Especially chicken and turkey bones are brittle and can easily splinter and cause choking.  Some pork and beef bones can also have this potential.  If you decided to give your dog an animal bone; use a shin bone but make sure you supervise
  • Never give Cow Hooves – they can splinter into sharp pieces that have killed many dogs
  • Smoked Pig Ears – the smoked pig ears are coated with a carcinogenic coating
  • Do Not Use Any Dog Treats that contain the following:  BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin, propylene glycol, menadione – also known as dimethylprimidinol sulfateand corn syrups/sugar that cause cancer
  • Non-Edible Nylabones have the potential of being dangerous because if your dog bites off a small piece that gets into their system, it could cause problems and cannot be detected on an X-Ray

ALWAYS SUPERVISE YOUR DOG WHEN FEEDING THEM DOG TREATS AS ANY TREAT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BE A DANGEROUS DOG TREAT IF YOUR PET SWALLOWS IT WHOLE OR HAS A HABIT OF GULPING THEIR FOOD

~ TREATS THAT ARE SAFE FOR YOUR DOG ~

  • Natural pig ears (not smoked)
  • Edible Nylabones
  • American made Bully Sticks
  • Unbleached natural lamb ears
  • Kong Goodie Ships
  • Stuffable hard rubber toys
  • Frozen carrots – naturally clean teeth
